Dear Mayor & City Council: We are aware of an initiative to change the name of Interstate Ave to Cesar Chavez Blvd. We are here to tell you that we are against this change. A change like this will cause all of the businesses on this major thoroughfare to incur enormous costs to change their business cards, letterheads, websites, etc... not to mention the fact that they will have to notify all customers and vendors of the change. Also, the taxpayers will have to cover the burden of changing street signs, maps, etc. This cost is estimated at over $100,000. Secondly, we feel that there are much better ways to honor the legacy of this civil rights leader, for example: a community center for advancement that has outreach programs to local schools and the community to encourage and increase the awareness of their struggles.
Fellow Portlanders, PLEASE sign this petition and speak out against this proposed change. It is unnecessary, it places a financial burden on the businesses and residents located on the Avenue, and it\'s a poor use of Portland\'s tax funds during a time when we could be spending the money on our public school system (or other well deserving opportunities). This change will cost over $100,000 of our hard earned money and it\'s something that we, the tax paying citizens of Portland, should refuse to pay for. Now is the time to voice your opinion. Do not remain silent any longer, we can prevent this change if we work together.
The bureaucrats at City Hall are hoping we get tired and give up before we hit 500 signatures. Do not let them off the hook while they try to waste our tax money on this ridiculous street renaming project. Get five people you know to sign this right now so we can stop this nonsense in its tracks.

Ridiculous. My shop just bought all new stationary and business cards. Changing the address would be a nightmare for me.

This is totally unnecessary. Find a park or a new building to name after him if you really want to honor him but stop messing with our street names.
