The toy room has been a valuable resource available to help provide comfort in the form of toys to patients who are hospitalized or come to our clinics for care. As we all know as residents, our patient's happiness and emotional well being can be large contributors to their care overall. Helping to reduce anxiety the form of easily accessible toys can contribute to overall clinical improvement as kids will be more likely to be compliant with taking medication as well as is a great distraction during procedures while reducing perception of pain.

Unfortunately there is some discussion and conversation about potentially moving the Toy Room currently located on campus at CHLA to an off campus site.

Given the large benefits of having easy access to toys for our patients, we, the Pediatric Residents at CHLA, are signing this petition in order to keep the Toy Room located on the CHLA campus. We urge the administration involved in this matter to consider the deep implications of moving off site and the repercussions it may have for all of our pediatric patients.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many of you stepped up to protect this resource for our patients. This momentum belongs entirely to the community that understands why these toys are essential to the healing process. I truly never imagined so many people would feel this strongly about keeping the toy room right where it belongs.

As a pediatric resident at CHLA, one of the most fulfilling things I can do when I have a free moment is go to the toy room, pick out some toys, and hand-deliver them to my patients. It helps us care for our kids in a more holistic way and build a trusting relationship between patients, families, and the medical team. Since we are so busy, we never know ahead of time when we'll actually have time to visit the toyroom--so it would effectively eliminate this as an option if the toyroom were to be moved off campus.

Going to the toy room is one of my favorite things to do when I am on wards. It allows us to bring a little bit of joy to are kids that face such difficult circumstances

Being able to take a trip to the toy room and select toys specifically for each of our admitted patients based on what we know about them is an incredibly valued experience! I have very positive, fond memories of selecting the perfect toy and being able to give them to my patients. I think it is an important experience for both the residents and our patients. It is always the perfect moral boost during any difficult time on the wards, and allows us to show our patients that we know them and we care about them as children, beyond their disease process.

We should absolutely keep the toy room on campus. It gives our medical students and residents the opportunity to provide toys to patients and engage with play-- which is important for both trainee mental health and learning about development.

The toy room needs to stay on site at CHLA! Receiving a toy can distract from the difficulty of hospitalization for patients and their families. As a pediatric resident I have seen multiple times how the simple gift of a toy strengthens the relationship between the clinical team and patient, especially reminding all that we all have the patient’s best interests as our top priority.

The ability to visit the toy room to pick out toys that appeal to our patient’s unique individual interests is a huge asset in building strong and trusting therapeutic relationships!

The toy room allows our physicians to go the extra mile and put a smile on our patient's faces. The toy room truly brightens our patient's stay, and it would be a true loss if we were to move it.

Having the toy room on site provides a lot of joy to children going through very difficult times in their lives!
