The toy room has been a valuable resource available to help provide comfort in the form of toys to patients who are hospitalized or come to our clinics for care. As we all know as residents, our patient's happiness and emotional well being can be large contributors to their care overall. Helping to reduce anxiety the form of easily accessible toys can contribute to overall clinical improvement as kids will be more likely to be compliant with taking medication as well as is a great distraction during procedures while reducing perception of pain.
Unfortunately there is some discussion and conversation about potentially moving the Toy Room currently located on campus at CHLA to an off campus site.
Given the large benefits of having easy access to toys for our patients, we, the Pediatric Residents at CHLA, are signing this petition in order to keep the Toy Room located on the CHLA campus. We urge the administration involved in this matter to consider the deep implications of moving off site and the repercussions it may have for all of our pediatric patients.
As a pediatric resident at CHLA, one of the most fulfilling things I can do when I have a free moment is go to the toy room, pick out some toys, and hand-deliver them to my patients. It helps us care for our kids in a more holistic way and build a trusting relationship between patients, families, and the medical team. Since we are so busy, we never know ahead of time when we'll actually have time to visit the toyroom--so it would effectively eliminate this as an option if the toyroom were to be moved off campus.
