The Diocese has officially reversed the decision to close Holy Agony Church. Our parish will remain open to serve this community. I am deeply appreciative of the commitment shown by everyone who took action to protect this home.

Serving the diverse community of East Harlem for the past 62 years, Holy Agony has been slated to close its doors in August 2015 as part of the Diocese of NY church closures.
The parish congregration has grown almost 20 percent in the past 10 or so years with only a deficit of $36,000. It is now being merged with her sister church of St. Cecilia on 106th Street. WHY?
Holy Agony church has been the only church in east harlem that has made accessible to our handicapped (wheelchair bound, walkers, and cane assisted) members.
The community is devastated. Please help us in keeping our parish open. Sirviendo a la comunidad diversa de East Harlem durante los últimos 62 años, Santa Agonía ha sido programado para cerrar sus puertas en agosto de 2015 como parte de los cierres de iglesias de la diócesis de NY.
La congregación de la parroquia han visto casi un 20 por ciento crecimiento en los últimos 10 años más o menos y con un sólo una déficit de $ 36.000. En la actualidad se está fusionando con su iglesia hermana de Santa Cecilia en 106o St. ¿POR QUÉ?
Nuestra comunidad deSanta Agonía está "devastada" al saber que a pesar de la que la parroquia sigue creciendo, como es que han decidido cerrar sus puertas. Sabemos algunas parroquias están teniendo problemas económicos graves, Santa Agonía no tiene este problema. En términos de la congregación que continúa creciendo. Decir que hay una disminución de la población católica, no es tan cierto, aunque hay una disminución en la vida católica, y hay todo tipo de razones para ello.
Originalmente, la Santa Iglesia Agonía en 1950 se encuentra en la calle E. 98; hasta que fue demolido para hacer espacio para los proyectos de vivienda pública. En aquellos días sólo había dos iglesias católicas en NY el otro es La Milagrosa en E. 115 St.(ahora cerrado).
Santa Agonía ha servido y ministrado a miles y miles de puertorriqueños que llegaron desde la isla. En ese tiempo la señora Livigne y muchos voluntarios, literalmente, fue de puerta en puerta recogiendo dinero y finalmente convenció al cardenal en ese momento (el Cardenal Spellman), para reconstruir.
En 1952 la nueva Santa Agonía fue construida con los sacrificios de muchos trabajos de cuello azul. Como uno de los feligreses dijeron recientemente, "La Santa Agonía sigue siendo el alma de la comunidad de Puertorriqueños y Mexicanos de El Barrio".
Le pedimos que publique fotos, testimonios, comentarios y consejos en esta página. Santa Agonía ha sido como una madre para muchos y sus hijos están tratando de salvarla. Necesitamos su ayuda, sus oraciones y un Milagro.

I have spent the past several days reviewing the personal testimonies shared by our parishioners regarding the necessity of maintaining accessibility at Holy Agony. These accounts illustrate precisely why the closure of our parish would be a significant loss for our community members who rely on our facilities. I am currently preparing a formal letter to the Diocese to underscore these specific concerns.

Please keep this church open. This community truly loves and needs this parish open to continue their spiritual growth and their bond with Christ in union with their community members!
This church has been like a second home. I was baptized there grandkids as well. It has played a major role in my faith.
Please keep this historical beautiful and blessed building and parish of God open so it can continue to serve the people of El Barrio. God bless
My family has been in this parish for over 50 years. Generations of us have been baptized, made communions, confirmations, weddings and had funerals all in this parish. This where I learned what God is and how to pray as a child. Please don't take that away from us.
Holy Agony Church has been my church for close to 20 years and I'm just turning 26! I have been a part of this community even after I moved to the Bronx. Holy Agony Church is where I find peace and my faith restored in the smiles and kind words of those who work everyday to try to keep our spirits alive. Please do not close our second home and refuge.
