Oakland rents are skyrocketing, with increases up to 120% in the past year. Oakland had the 2nd highest San Francisco/Bay Area and 3rd highest national rent increases in 2014.

The last 32 years of rental development is not protected by Oakland rent control, leaving thousands of young people and families vulnerable to unjustified increases that have no cap.

We the people of Oakland, California are asking Mayor Schaaf and the Oakland City Council to:

(1) Extend rent control protection to all Oakland renters, including those who live in 'new' development built in the past 32 years.

(2) Immediately freeze and investigate all rent increases of more than 10%.

(3) Provide rent control protection to all Oakland renters retroactive to January 2014.

(4) Roll back rents where 2014/15 increases cannot be justified under Oakland rent control laws.

We are proud to support growth in our community, and believe pro-growth does not have to be anti-tenant. Mayor Schaaf, please honor your campaign promise to preserve affordability so Oakland residents don’t get displaced.

Updates

February 23, 2015

The current level of public interest has prompted formal outreach from local news outlets regarding our demand to freeze rent increases. I am currently scheduling a meeting with representatives from the City Council to present these policy goals directly.

My LL just hiked my rent by $600 and I have no choice but to leave. This city is losing its soul and the people who actually work here.

Yes indeed. I am already priced out of my neighborhood of 5 years, that I have a community of friends in.

The rent increases in Oakland hurt young professionals just starting careers, living on their own etc.

I am directly impacted by the lack of protection for tenants renting a unit built after 1983. My landlord has given me a 70% increase after a 1-year lease. Please extend rent control to all Oakland tenants so we are not pushed out of the city we love so much and want to make our home.

Please do something now before Oakland turns into an unaffordable East Bay version of San Francisco!
