It has come to our attention that Ms. Sandra Meltzer, music teacher at DMAE, has been told that she will be spending two periods a day next year teaching music at the local elementary school. As students in many of Ms. Meltzer's classes, we are concerned about how this will affect our high school's music program. As she teaches most music classes including concert band, jazz band, chorus, select vocal, string ensemble, applied music, etc., losing her two periods a day would force an end to some of these classes. All of these ensembles flourish under her leadership and would suffer from her lack of guidance. We the students have started this petition because we could not imagine a music program without Ms. Meltzer there full time. Also, the environment at DMAE would suffer without a robust music program and students would lose venues for creative expression. Ms. Meltzer has proven her worth as a full time teacher at DMAE by bringing together a diverse high school campus and creating an award-winning music program.
