We the parents, relatives and students of Kingston Elementary School in Virginia Beach, do hereby petition the Virginia Beach School Board and Dr. James G. Merrill, Superintendent, to keep our music teacher, Mrs. Dornbrock five days a week. We believe Mrs. Dornbrock, who has been with Kingston for over 20 years, will be unable to continue going above and beyond the required music curriculum while only being at Kingston four days a week. Not to mention, having to be accountable for music at another Virginia Beach school, preparing lesson plans, programs, learning new material and traveling to and from both schools.
Some of the extra programs Mrs. Dornbrock currently provides our students are as follows:
Teaching Recorders to Third Graders
The All Boys Chorus (Third through Fifth Grade)
Extra Musical Performances
Resourcing with the classroom teachers
Holding after school rehearsals
....just to name a few. It is our hope that you, as our elected officials, will hear our plea and reconsider reducing the number of days Mrs. Dornbrock will be teaching at Kingston. We understand that this is an enrollment/allocation issue in which we are only short by 10 students. The loss to our school as well as our students must far out way the benefit. Having been lucky enough to have the same music instructor for such a long period of time has set a standard we have come to expect as well as appreciate. Please reconsider this decision.
I have requested a formal meeting with the school board to present the specific concerns regarding the music program budget. Drafting the documentation that highlights the impact of this schedule change on extracurricular activities is my current priority.

Mrs. Dornbrock is the heart of Kingston. My daughter loves her morning chorus practice and it would be a huge shame to lose that time with her.

Please dont cut her hours. She puts in so much extra work after the bell rings it wouldnt be fair to take her away one day a week.

Keep her at Kingston! She does way more than just teach notes she actually cares about the kids.

The board needs to get their priorities straight. Music is just as important as math and shes the best one we have.

20 years of service and this is the thanks she gets? Really?? Keep her here full time. This is ridiculous.
