RCA is proposing removing lighweight from the high school level. If the category is removed it will eliminate 16 events from CSSRA as well as take away many opportunities from young lighweight rowers.

Updates

November 28, 2017

We have reached the two hundred and fifty signature mark today. I am now preparing a formal brief to deliver to the RCA board regarding the impact of these proposed changes. Expect an update once I receive a response from their office.

We are approaching the one hundred signature mark which is the threshold required to request a formal meeting with the CSSRA board. Please direct this link to anyone involved in the rowing community so we can secure that appointment this week.

Is RCA giving up on Canada ever being competitive internationally in lwt boats? What will happen to the development pool with no high school programs fostering new lwt rowers? How can this help improve or even maintain participation in the sport at the high school level?

At my daughter's school, she had the choice of rowing light or heavy weight. During her 4 years, there were no mid-weight rowers, If not for the light-weight program, she would not have rowed. Rowing is a tremendous confidence building opportunity for young petite stature girls.

There is a huge proportion of high school kids who are lightweight category as many are just hitting puberty in grade 9. The category gives them a place to compete and fall in love with the sport. It gets more kids rowing.

We lost the fight to keep lightweight rowing under 19 in the summer competitive level. Let's not let them do it again to the detriment of rowing and our smaller, younger oarspeople who love the sport.

My son won CSSRA gold in the lightweight category last year. Aside from the pride, cutting athletes will eliminate future coaches and volunteers for our sport. Also will impact club revenues as school feeds summer which feeds fall programs.

Isn't high school about developing lifetime fitness habits? Removing the lightweight category would discourage a large number of young men and women from participating in and developing what could be a lifetime love for this fantastic sport.

I am a lightweigt rower, and I find it extremely annoying and disappointing when against the heavyweights.
