The Council Rock School District is threatening to remove German as one of the languages offered to students.
The district wants to stop offering a language that gives students valuable opportunities to learn the language while participating in many German cultural events.
This is the only language that has an exchange program every year (for over thirty years). There are endless trips, competitions, and cultural experiences that students who study the language or who know the language can be a part of.
If the school district takes away this language they are also taking away these opportunities from their students.
There are many students who graduated from Council Rock's German program who went on to find employment in which they use this language everyday. Taking away this language will not only affect the students throughout middle school and high school, but also limit future employment opportunities. Knowledge of the German language is a great asset for anyone and it will put CR students a step ahead of others when pursuing educational and employment opportunities.

I am a product of the German program at Council Rock and currently teach German at Hempfield School District in Lancaster County. It would be a great disappoint to lose this very influential language. This is clearly not the Council Rock I remember!
I have a CR student that is entering 7th grade She has been looking forward to take German since 4th grade I had another child that took German for 5 yrs in CR and will be stationed in Germany for the U.S. Government
The German program at CRSD was an invaluable experience for my son & daughter. The exchange component of the program allowed 4 kids from different parts of the world to explore each others' countries. We need more cross-cultural communication like this!
Learning German, connecting with my heritage and going on the German exchange was one of the best experiences of my life. Don't take that away! German is useful for jobs at several engineering companies. I've gotten job offers because I knew German.
German at Council Rock was one of the major factors that led me to engage the world globally as a college student and business man. A decision against that would hurt future leaders and continue the silo effect to normalized skills. Let kids dare to be different, it will get them noticed.
I graduated from CRHS in 1997, taking four years of German. Subsequently in college I took more German classes to get an equivalent of a minor in addition to an engineering degree. More than half of my jobs I gained were because of being proficient in German language. Many of the jobs were either headquartered in Germany or had German customers. A less obvious benefit of learning German gave me better insight into English: something I was much weaker in writing and speaking. I gained better control over phonetics, diction and grammar by learning the root of English known as German. Therefore, learning German starting in High School to promote me to learn in college has given me many advantages in gaining great career opportunities.

Taking German at Council Rock was imperative to my education and Frau Toneatto was the inspiration that led to my being the Kornblumen Königin, Miss German America of Philadelphia 2007-2008. German education should be offered in more districts, not less!
