PS 33 CANNOT LOSE SPANISH EDUCATION

There have been many studies done on the importance of young children learning a foreign language starting in Kindergarten. Young children absorb foreign languages much more easily than older students. Studies have also shown that the brains of young children have several areas in language acquisition and that these areas greatly diminish as the child grows.

Studying a foreign language improves overall academic performance. It reinforces the core subjects of reading, language arts, social studies and math .It also increases listening ability, creative and critical thinking.

There have been many changes at Chelsea Prep over this last school year. Some of these changes have been well received by parents but others have not. Losing Spanish is something that we will absolutely not stand for!

Please let your voice be heard in supporting the continuation of Spanish Language classes at PS33 Chelsea Prep Elementary School .

Please sign the petition and also, please email our Interim Acting Principal, Cindy Wang to let her know why Spanish should continue at PS 33. Everyone should email her at: [email protected]

Gracias!

I have spent my week reading your personal messages about how much these language classes mean to our children at Chelsea Prep. It is heartbreaking to hear how many of you feel ignored by the current administration. I am currently reaching out to district leadership to demand a formal explanation for this proposed cut.

Seeing this kind of energy for our program at PS 33 is truly moving. My heart swells knowing I am not the only one fighting to keep Spanish in our hallways.

While I support the idea of Spanish as an enhancement - I am appalled by the behavior of the instructor...demeaning, and often bullying behavior directed at children. My vote is to keep Spanish with a new instructor or make it an optional enhancement for those who do not wish their child to learn a language from this teacher.

I believe that learning Spanish language is of the essence for our children and their future in this country. In all the main cities, knowledge of Spanish has often become a requirement for getting jobs. We need to prepare our kids for the future that is ahead of them. They should have Spanish class at least twice a week.

My kids have taken several different language classes over the years, but my son has learned much more from the class at PS 33 than any of the others. It is a huge benefit to me that he receives foreign language instruction during the school day as well. Please do not take away this excellent program.

We chose Chelsea Prep partly because of its strong Spanish curriculum. Please don't take it away and allow our kids to suffer.

Our children have been so lucky to be learning a 2nd language since K at PS33. They have worked very hard and absolutely love Ms. Sorribas, whose passion for languages and dedication to the kids is very special. Why drop Spanish now, after such momentum? It would bring the school to a lower level.

The Spanish program at PS 33 is one of the cornerstones of a well-rounded, enriching curriculum. To eleminate it would be a disservice to our school and to our children, many of whom have now been studying the language for several years and need the consistency of continued study to progress in the language. I strongly support Spanish at PS33.
