Dear CRLS students,
Two weeks ago, the superintendent presented a plan for a possible CPS budget for the 2014-15 school year. Included in this proposal were significant cuts to the CRLS staff, namely, all of the Learning Community secretaries (including our beloved Berhan Duncan).
I firmly believe that the city and the CRLS administration would be making a horrible mistake by cutting our LC secretaries, who keep 400+ students and staff organized, deal with daily attendance records, act as the school's communicators with families, create a supportive, welcoming atmosphere in our LC offices, among other crucial tasks. According to the budget proposal, our secretaries will be replaced by computers next year.
The School Committee will vote next Tuesday on whether they will stay. Please sign this petition if you agree that the LC secretaries are a vital part of the CRLS community and should keep their positions next year for the good of our entire school.

I honestly cannot believe they think a computer could ever replace Berhan or any of the others because they do so much more than just log attendance for us. People keep sending me messages about how much their individual clerks helped them during rough times and it just makes me more certain that we are right to fight this.

I rely on the LC Secretary to have two way communication with my daughter's school. The secretary has been my main point of contact and an advocate for my daughter when issues arise. The secretaries foster a sense of community that cannot be provided by a computer.
CRLS' LC Clerks/Secretaries are very helpful, and are always so nice. Especially at the beginning of the year when I just started school at CRLS, they really helped me feel at home and gain some confidence on my first days of high school.
At the school committee meeting tonight, I saw the disregard with which these clerks are viewed. Several school committee members claimed that they do little more than perform administrative tasks, and are not an effective use of tax money. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have never met a clerk as dedicated and involved in the community as Berhan.
Jeannie knows me by my name finally (4th year's the charm)!!! Despite what many think, the secretaries at CRLS are really important to our wellbeing. They keep everything organized and are such an important part of the CRLS community.
Berhan is such an important part of the school R community and the CRLS community in general. Maybe a computer cold replace his administrative tasks, but it could never replace the compassion and one on one support he provides students.
Disgraceful.
It's true that many times we need to interact with Learning Community and having a person to talk with is absolutely critical.

Berhan in LC R has been one of the most important adults in my experience at CRLS. He cares about how I'm doing, makes life easier for family and even gives me fruit if I happened to miss breakfast. Our secretaries contribute more than a computer ever could. I cannot imagine Rindge without them, please keep our secretaries!!!
