To: Vancouver School District Superintendent Dr. Steve Webb

Vancouver School District Parents, Teachers, and Children Support

Opening Vancouver Schools

Anderson, Chinook, Eisenhower, Felida, Franklin, Fruit Valley, Harney, Hazel Dell, Hough, King, Lakeshore, Leiser Campus, Lincoln, Marshall, Minnehaha, Ogden, Roosevelt, Sacajawea, Salmon Creek, Truman, Walnut Grove, Washington, Alki, Discovery, Gaiser, iTech Preparatory, Jason Lee, Jefferson, Leiser Campus, McLoughlin, Vancouver School of Art and Academics, Columbia River, Fort Vancouver, Hudson’s Bay, Skyview, Vancouver Flex Academy

WHEREAS: When families, communities and schools work together, students are more successful and the entire community benefits. (Source: US Department of Education). The haphazard decision to move public education to on-line learning model is putting children, parents, and the entire Vancouver community in a perilous situation, and

WHEREAS: In July the United States District Court agreed: “Governor Inslee does not, will not, and cannot enforce his Proclamations” (Seattle Times) regarding Covid-19. Inslee then admitted that all enforcement powers rest with other officials. The “other officials” are the various government agencies i.e. Health Department, Education Department etc. Covid guidelines are not laws—they are guidelines that leave much room for real collaboration between school district leadership, parents, and students without fear of legal repercussions, and

WHEREAS: There are alternative ways to combat Covid 19. A one size fits all approach to combat a virus is not how science works, and it’s not how free societies and communities prosper. Three of the world’s top medical scientists from Stanford, Oxford, and Harvard have recommended an alternative road map that greatly considers the real negative consequences of children not physically attending school as well as offering sound science on natural “herd immunity” to combat all viruses. (Source: The Great Barrington Declaration), and

WHEREAS: During the Buck Institute webinar in July,The Center of Disease Control (CDC) Director, Robert Redfield, said that suicides and drug overdoses have surpassed the death rate of Covid19 among high school students. Redfield argued that lockdowns and lack of public schooling constituted a disproportionally negative impact on young people’s mental health;

THEREFORE: I insist that our District Superintendent Dr. Steve Webb work with Parents and Students to end on-line learning and support fully OPENING VANCOUVER SCHOOLS, per the “Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, “Reopening Washington Schools 2020: District Planning Guide”

I am honestly a bit stunned by the momentum this has gained lately. This movement is entirely your doing and I am just grateful to be part of what you all have built together.

Online education is not for everyone. Middle and high school kids needs to go back to school in person. Grocery stores and big box stores, like Walmart, are over crowded but schools are closed?

Three years ago my son committed suicide. Since school has shut down, my high schooler and middle schooler's mental health has drastically declined. I cannot loose another child to suicide. I plead with you to consider the tragedy our teens are facing. Please allow them to go back to school. The pandemic for our kids is not COVID, it's anxiety, depression and suicide!

Vancouver School District has done an wonderful job implementing a safe on-site learning environment for Kindergarten. Let's get the rest of the kids back in school too, they desperately need it.

Our public school students are being put at a disadvantage.., especially our teens who will have to compete for admission to colleges. It will show poorly for our public’s schools. Think about this when you want another Levy for more money.

Please open schools for our upperclassmen who are running out of time to prepare for college and beyond. They are failing at record rates and suffering mental health issues. Please prioritize our kids and their future.

My son is special needs and had such a hard time last spring. He won't really engage in zoom, and has significantly regressed. He is currently going two days per week but it's not enough. He has daily meltdowns when he's not in school.

It's unconscionable that you do not have our kids in school for in person learning. Scientific research shows that kids are 6x more likely to die of the flu than COVID. Grocery workers show up for work every day and so should teachers. If they're old and obese it might be time for them to retire, because otherwise the teachers have a 99.75% chance of recovering if they become infected. You've put way too many children at risk of failing due to your lack of commitment to putting the children first. We know the unions put the teachers first, but as an ex-teacher I'm sick and tired of paying property taxes and having the school superintendent fail the kids. Stand up and do the right thing. If some parents have fallen for the pervasive fear porn on the news they can have the old teachers Zoom their kids. Just don't inflict this nonsense on the rest of the kids. The gig is up and we're not going to take it any more
