Enforcement of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978, this federal law would encourage child protective service agencies within the different states to acknowledge the involvement of all of the tribes to help preserve native families and also make sure that children stay with the tribes of the biological parents. I would like to encourage the different tribes to please sign the petition to help preserve native families, after all we are still fighting for what native rights that we have. Our people have had our subsistance taken from us, our native tongue, totem poles and ragalias burned due to the different religions. Please help preserve our native families, the local CPS workers here in this state feel that they aren't at liberty to share with the local tribes here in Alaska, in which this is a federal law. And so where is the cultural sensitivity?? Also, this will help get get some more legal education for ICWA workers as well.

Updates

February 16, 2012

The growth of this petition has captured the attention of legal advocates working on tribal compliance issues. I am currently coordinating a series of briefings to address the reporting failures mentioned by local agencies. Expect an update on our scheduled discussions with agency oversight committees shortly.

The law is the law. They need to stop ignoring the tribes and start respecting these families.

It is so frustrating that CPS thinks they can just bypass federal requirements. Keep these kids connected to their heritage.
