Jason Hawkes, owner of Cardinal Skate shop and local sponsored skateboarder Ken Whitley are trying to convince The Family Center of Hope program committee to enable a skateboarding club. The Family Center of Hope is a non-profit therapeutic foster care agency offering contemporary intensive case management services for moderately to severely emotionally disturbed children in the Tidewater Virginia area.
HOPE is a great place for children who were emotionally and physically abused to grow up and hopefully find permanent homes with families who love them. However, there is a lack of extra-curricular clubs to join. If we can create a skateboarding club, we can provide an outlet for children to release their anxieties through skateboarding.
If we can get this club running, Cardinal Skate Shops will donate skateboards and safety equipment to every child who wishes to join the club. Classes will be taught by an experienced skateboarder who also grew up in The Family Center of Hope to provide lessons on the basics of skateboarding and provide emotional support.

I have been meeting with the committee members to discuss how the equipment donations from Cardinal Skate Shop will work in practice. It is encouraging to see them listen to my ideas about how skateboarding can provide a vital emotional outlet for the kids who need it most.

Seeing this level of support for the kids at The Family Center of Hope is overwhelming because I know how much a simple outlet like skateboarding would have changed my own experience growing up in care. This momentum proves that our community cares about giving these children a healthy way to process their struggles.
