By signing this petition, you agree there is material in the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian which is inappropriate for minor students http://dh.truman.edu/english/fall2017group02/sexual-themes/. Further, you agree that this book should be removed from the "approved" list of books used for instruction. In addition, we request an evaluation/audit of instructional materials.

Updates

January 17, 2022

The feedback I receive through your comments continues to highlight a shared concern about the transparency of our district materials. I am currently organizing these perspectives to ensure that the administration understands the scope of this request for an audit.

January 17, 2022

The momentum behind this effort indicates how many people share a genuine concern regarding our current instructional materials. This level of engagement reinforces the necessity of our request for a formal audit. We are now preparing the next steps to ensure these expectations reach the administration.

A book with content such as this has no business on a high school reading list. I'm curious as to how it ended up on a reading list in the first place. Is no one in authority paying attention?

Kids get enough sexual content in their lives without assigning reading to them that talks about the joys of masturbation. Let them have a break from our hyper-sexualized culture!

This was disturbing to read. When I realized that my daughter was assigned this book her freshman year at Empire I was even more outraged. She ran up to her room and brought it down to our dinner table discussion. She said, I didn’t even know what all that meant my freshman year!”

Books containing this type of sexual content have no place in our education sysytem. There is no meaningful literary curriculum that cannot be taught without this vulgar content. Our children should be learning how to use the power of written language to stimulate meaningful discussion not learning how to sexually stimulate themselves.

The book possibly slipped through the approval process because of the authors name - who has written other books which would be considered appropriate. However, THIS book is NOT appropriate reading material. And should be removed.

I read the whole book. It could have been very good if it took out the sexual references. That doesn't belong in this age group. It was very uncomfortable. Otherwise the themes about overcoming adversity and family dynamics were good. I think parents really need to be able to review all other instructional materials.

I wouldn’t want to read this as an adult because of its filth. Please remove it from the reading list.
