The Department of Education (DOE) has put a hiring freeze on permanent part-time (known as f-status) art and music teachers. Our amazing music teacher, Dan and our exceptional art teacher, Sasha are both in this category. Of course Muscota's administration applied for an exception right away, but our request was denied. We are appealing again, this time from the parent community.
Unfortunately, the Parents Association cannot contribute to teacher salaries; to hire Dan and Sasha, we must have our second appeal for an exception to the hiring freeze approved.
We ask for your help in this—we've written an appeal letter on behalf of Muscota parents and would like to accompany it with a petition that shows the DOE that our appeal reflects the feeling of the entire community, not just the opinion of a passionate few.
Please take a moment to sign this petition and leave a comment to show the Department of Education how very important Dan and Sasha are to our children and to our school.

Music under Dan has been invaluable to my children. Dan has spent hours during remote learning working with our children bringing them joy. Music and Art are integral parts of learning at Muscota and one of the main reasons we chose this school. Please reconsider.
Music and art may seem like a luxury but it’s part of the unique Muscota DNA that drew us to the school. Removing Dan and Sasha from Muscota would negatively affect the individual students and the entire school community. Please reconsider.
Dan and Sasha are essential teachers. I believe that the Arts are necessary for my child's well being, especially during a pandemic. The arts provide a great deal of emotional support and have allowed my child to express and navigate their emotions.
Dan and Sasha are both important and integral members of the Muscota community. In addition to classroom instruction, they are the driving force behind deeply important Muscota traditions like Candlelight Night and the annual art show.
We chose to send our daughter to Muscota because of the central role arts plays in the school. And that wonderful education is due in large part to Dan and Sasha. They are absolutely necessary to the life of this school, and the education we chose for our child.
Dan and Sasha are both integral parts of what makes Muscota special to the kids who go there. Both in classroom instruction as well as Muscota traditions like Candlelight Night and the Mad Hatter’s Ball their contributions are unique, useful, and appreciated by students and parents alike. If you value the instruction provided by strongly community-based schools such as Muscota you will authorize their re-hiring.
Art and music is as critical as math and reading. This would be a devastating loss to this community. Please keep them.

Dan and Sasha are central to Muscota's school and its focus on integrating arts as an important educational tool. For our kids, Dan and Sasha are not "extras" - but part of the fabric of the school and a loss would be devastating to our kids in this already unstable time.
