New Mexicans have long been proud of their dark pristine night skies where one can see the entire Milky Way year round! In fact, they backed this up by enacting a law in 1999 called The Night Sky Protection Act. It's purpose is, "To regulate outdoor lighting fixtures to preserve and enhance the state's dark sky while promoting safety, conserving energy, and preserving the environment for astronomy." Recently, the New Mexico State Transportation Commission allowed electronic billboards along federal highways throughout the state. This is in direct opposition to the letter and intent of the law. Please do your part to help preserve and protect your right to enjoy this most precious natural resource that belongs to all of us by signing this petition demanding that the New Mexico State Commission reverse their decision allowing these distracting and light polluting billboards. Thank You!

As an amateur astronomer with a home in Teuque, I strongly agree that light polution, in this case in the form of electronic billboards, is to be avoided. As you would not wish to throw garbage on our roads and pollute the land, you should not wish to shine bright lights which pollute our night sky. Thank you.

How can a Commission just go ahead on their own to allow something that is prohibited by law? Whoever allowed this contrevention of law should be fired immediately!

Travelers are constant in their praise of the New Mexico skies, especially the night skies. Why risk the ruination of a #1 attraction with redundant useless advertising, which does interfere with safe driving.

Please don't go against your own good policy of keeping our night skies dark, as outlined in your own 1999 Night Skky Protection Act. A group of amateur astronomers are working very hard to establish a location in SW NM, Granite Gap, and do everything we can to acquaint the public with the loss of our dark skies!!

I am an amateur astrophotographer who is planning on moving to New Mexico in the not-too-distant future to escape the light pollution of my current residence. These billboards will help repel people like me.

Allowing more electronic signs was NOT in the interest of the public, but in the interest of outdoor advertising companies. It was also NOT in the interest of attracting tourists who come to New Mexico because of the dark skies which the electronic signs degrade.
