Have you heard of the new building in the woks for the waterfront in the New Town area of Ketchikan? The current owners, a company based in Puerto Rico, are planning to build some kind of building with a mix of shops and housing. During the first rounds of council meetings the consultant for the company gave vague details and provided no plans or sketches. All while claiming that they would have the work finished by cruise ship season. When asked about the height they responded by saying "we are planning on one to two, maybe three stores". And that "you will just have to trust us, we are local". The speaker for the company also got verbally aggressive towards myself and another citizen after I pointed out that the public was originally notified that the building would be 1-2 stories, as stated in a KRBD article.

The consultant was obviously trying to rush this rezone through the council while giving little to no details about what the building was actually going to be. Once the property, currently heavy industrial, is rezoned for residential the council and people of Ketchikan will have no say in the height of the building. So the sky is the limit and I believe this is the intent of the owners.

The vast majority of the houses and buildings in this area of town are two stories. And that is all we ask, to limit the height to a maximum of two stories. Please support your local citizens and add your signature to restrict this building project too two stories.

Thank you

I never expected this many people to care about our waterfront and honestly I am just trying to keep up with the notes you are all sending me. You have given me a lot more confidence to keep questioning these developers when they try to dodge simple questions about the plans.

Our neighborhood's have height restrictions so should our vanishing coastal areas. Our tourism depends on water views, possible whale sightings. Their first viewing of seaplane, heck of our water activities! All of the above is also of major import to we the residents, survivors and taxpayers. Please show wisdom in your choice to benefit your neighbors.

I am not all that enthusiastic about a building blocking my view but even less enthusiastic about losing it for another seasonal tourist shop. If the people/business in question were building low and middle income housing I would help them drive the pilings myself as that is something our community actually needs more of.

This is simply a bad idea. The potential start for something horrible down our waterfront. It’s bad enough that the cruise ships cut off the natural view when they are in port, but to have a permanent high rise structure is an abuse and insult to the waterfront of our town. Go up-hill if the view is desired. Don’t take it away from everyone else or you risk being despised.

Ketchikan's water views are priceless and part of its history and integrity as a community thats an intergrel part of the roots of Alaskas identity. It is imperative we do not allow companies or people to taint that with massive distractions or entirely blocking the natural and history beauty of our city, harbors, and surroundings.
