Final supporters
Neighbors, as most of you may have already heard, there was a child that was hit by a car while crossing the crosswalk on his bike yesterday. This child was my son.
My son was on his way to school riding his bike and legally crossing at the crosswalk behind 2 adults. The adults safely crossed but then one car decided not to stop. That car hit my son Nickolas' back tire. The back tire then swung around and hit the front tire, causing it to swish in between his left leg. Luckily, he was able to walk away with only minor injuries but, he was very shaken up. As you can imagine, this could have been so much worse. Changes are needed now!
I have began by contacting the landscaping company requesting that the bushes adjacent to the crosswalk be trimmed to ensure the visibly of both oncoming traffic and pedestrians is not obstructed. It is my understanding that this has been addressed for now.
The next step will be more difficult. I believe we need a sign posting the school speed limit with blinking lights from the City of McAllen. I also believe, that we need a crossing guard and/or security guard for the students who legally utilize the crosswalk to and from Idea Tres Lagos.
I was informed that the school has hit several road blocks in the past attempting to get this done. They need parental assistance by means of raising voices to get things done.
With all this said, I am starting a Petition in hope to get action quickly! The more voices we can gather, the faster things can possibly get done.
Please, help me help all of our children!! We need a safe way for our children to get to school

The emails I send to the city go unanswered and it is exhausting to keep pushing when the silence feels so heavy. My son is recovering but the fear of that crosswalk remains and I will not let this drop until we have guards in place.

Access to the school is simply not safe for students who walk/bike to school. There is no crosswalk at the main entrance nor is there a sidewalk where the road is, forcing students to share the road with vehicles. It’s infuriating that a child got hit by a car and it’s only a matter of time before something more serious happens. City of McAllen should address this immediately.
This crossing is a hazard in the daytime as well as the nighttime as there are no lights there. Please keep students and other pedestrians safe by making this crosswalk more visible (blinking lights, shrubs cut back, etc.) and by having crossing guards during school hours.
Much needed in Tres Lagos! There's no school zone signage restricting the speed limit to 20mph during the times of drop off and pick up, nor are the crosswalks protected. This should have been in place when the school was built. The residents of Tres Lagos, especially those that have children that attend IDEA, are aware of the problem and are extremely frustrated.
My Grandson Got struck by a Car, while riding his bike to Idea school in the morning. Thank God he was not seriously injured. No child should be in danger. There should be crossing guards, blinking lights, school speed zones. No parent should have to get a call that thier child was injured by a careless driver. Try to prevent future incidents, by protecting protecting our children. Concerned Grandma
We need a crosswalk light, for our children, park visitors, College students and now retail is moving in. We have way to much traffic entering and leaving our community at all hours. The city put in counters for the planning for lights at the entrance, it is simple to use that data to justify the installation. Please don’t let one of our children or visitors become a statistic.
