In comparison to many countries around the world, the United States falls way behind in terms of the length of paid maternity leave. Although California is one of three states in the United States that has a parental leave policy, the current policy falls short as opposed to countries like the U.K and Denmark. Current California parental leave policies only require companies to provide 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Countries that heavily support parental leave often provide up to a year of paid maternity leave and even guarantee 100% of their current income up to certain amount per week. Employees should not have to choose between their job or the care and health of their newborns. Numerous studies show that beneficial paid parental leave would not only benefit child and parent, but also society and companies. The California Parental Leave Act would extend parental leave and ensure a percentage based income for maternity leave.

12 weeks is barely enough time to heal let alone bond with a baby. My bank account took a huge hit when I had my daughter because unpaid leave is just not realistic for most families. Change this now.
