The district finally agreed to move forward with full day kindergarten. I am exhausted by the fight, but I am relieved that we managed to secure an education that is accessible to every child in our community.

Currently District 58 offers an optional afternoon program to the kindergarten students called OKEEP. This program allows for more free play, STEAM activities, centers, and more hands on learning. The program itself is a good program. However, this program costs $2,550 per student. Due to the cost of the program it limits the accessibility to all kindergarten students. Those who can not afford it and do not qualify for free/reduced lunch they are just not able to participate in this program. Also, this program is not addressing the issue of needing more learning time and hands on experiences for the core subjects that are taught in the first 3 hours of the day. Instead of OKEEP, Full Day Kindergarten needs to be incorporated into District 58. There are many districts that surround us to include Westmont, Woodridge, Darien, Lisle, and Naperville that offer Full Day Kindergarten at no additional cost. District 58 will not try to incorporate a Full Day Kindergarten Program unless they feel they are not meeting the needs of the families within the district. Please sign this petition if you would like to see a Full Day Kindergarten Program offered in District 58.

With the amount of taxes we pay in DG, we should be able to allocate them to funding full day K at little to no cost for EVERYONE in our district. I have a graduating kindergartener in a few weeks enrolled in OKEEP and while I appreciate all the teachers and staff do, $2500 is cost prohibitive for many families.
Even though full day is “optional”, it has been proven that students who attend full day fare better. Thus parents are “forced” to enroll their children in O’Keep even though they may not be able to afford it or run the risk of their child starting first grade at a disadvantage.
I would love to have my son benefit from full day kindergarten! We are a family that cannot afford okeep
My daughter does full day preschool and I would not want to regress her to half day kindergarten. They need to be prepared and have the structure they will have the next year in first grade and the rest of their lives.
As a teacher and mother of future kindergartener, this needs to happen. My oldest child had all day Kindergarten and it did wonders for her. I would hardly be able to afford OKEEP on my teacher's salary.
I have twins that will be attending starting in August. That’s over $5,000 for kindergarten?!

As a fellow teacher , I know the importance and necessity of a full day kindergarten program. District 58 is behind the times and really should have this. Lombard has had full day kindergarten for years and they are among the highest scoring districts in DuPage and other surrounding school districts.
