Petition to the West Des Moines City Council

Request to Designate the Woodland Hills Neighborhood Trail as the Haley Bishop Memorial Trail

To the Honorable Members of the West Des Moines City Council:

We, the undersigned residents and community members, respectfully submit this petition requesting that the trail located in the Woodland Hills neighborhood be officially named the Haley Bishop Memorial Trail in honor of our beloved friend and neighbor, Haley Bishop, who passed away in November at just 45 years old.

No one used, loved, or championed this trail more than Haley. She was truly the heart of the Woodland Hills neighborhood—a constant, warm, and welcoming presence. Haley befriended everyone she encountered along the trail, whether with a wave, a kind word, or a genuine conversation that made people feel seen and valued. Her positivity and kindness helped shape the spirit of our community.

For years, Haley could be found walking along the trail in every season and weather condition. Her presence became a familiar and uplifting sight for neighbors of all ages. Haley not only embodied the spirit of outdoor activity and wellness—she inspired it in others.

She was a passionate advocate for healthy living, outdoor recreation, and community connectedness. Haley encouraged families to get outside, organized informal walking groups, and consistently highlighted the importance of physical activity for both mental and physical health.

Naming the Woodland Hills trail in her memory would be a meaningful and fitting tribute to someone whose daily life reflected the values our city strives to promote: well-being, community engagement, and appreciation for our outdoor amenities. The Haley Bishop Memorial Trail would serve as a lasting reminder of her positive impact and as an ongoing inspiration for residents to continue embracing the outdoor activities she loved so dearly.

We kindly ask the West Des Moines City Council to consider and approve this designation in recognition of Haley’s extraordinary contributions to the health, vitality, and spirit of the Woodland Hills community.

With respect and gratitude,
The Undersigned Residents and Supporters

Haley was my daughter Natalie’s first grade teacher. She gave Natalie the love of books and children and because of Haley, Natalie is now a first grade teacher in FISD. She was and will always be remembered by my family. So much love to you all. Honored to sign.

I knew Hayley years ago from Life Time, and she was always one of the kindest, most sincere humans in the room. Hearing about how she showed up on these trails makes this even more meaningful. Naming the trail in her honor would be a beautiful way to keep her light moving through our community.

Hailey was a constant in our neighborhood. You could always count on her walking through the neighborhood with Rosie not far behind. I agree it would be a great idea to rename our trail to honor a beautiful friend and neighbor who spent a great deal of time on the trail treating her neighbors and putting smiles on everyone ones face.

Haley was a wonderful person. She still asked me to walk and didn’t mind that I wasn’t as fast as I once was. She wanted you to share your life and she would share her thoughts own during the walks.

I knew Hailey from her two neighbors on both sides of her home. She welcomed me into her family’s lives as I helped watched her two kids when they were little when she and Ryan would go on vacation. Hailey always wanted me to walk the kids to school (even in Feb!) I was always so cold! But this was important to her, and I think this trail being named after her would be a blessing.

Along with naming the trail in Haley's honor. I would like to help raise funds to cover the costs of the memorial signs for the trail. This is very important to our neighborhood.
