In 19-- I was a member of an U.S.A.F installation team that was instrumental in installing the microwave equipment that sat in a small building on the ridge. If memory serves it was a relay between Hickam AFB and Bellows AFS. Indeed, the stairway should be preserved.
Please reopen the stairs so we can all enjoy it. Accessing the stairs do not have to disruptive to the residents if done right. Limit the number of hikers with lottery and fees. Keeping the stairs closed does not keep people from hiking it!
I am a 35+ year veteran of the stairs and consider it one of the most memorable and significant scenic and physical experiences one can have anywhere. I beleive it is extremely important to keep them - and keep them in the best possible condition for now and the future.
Hope to open and maintain the Haiku Stairs; as a commercially viable ecological tourist destination on Oahu with minimal negative impact on the neighborhood. The views from above are priceless and hope to have the opportunity to climb the stairs legally soon.
If the concern has been legal action in case of accident or maintenance fees, then instead of closing this trail it would probably be more profitable to get visitors to sign a waiver and pay a fee. I would love to climb this one day
I'm going next year and I want to climb the stairs please!!!

Please do not destroy this historic structure. It is a valuable educational, historic, and climbing resource that affords climbers unparalleled views of Kane'ohe, of rare native plants, and of the natural environment of the Ko'olau mountains.
