The Birmingham Chinese Garden-Asian Cultural Center Foundation has big plans to build a Chinese Garden-Asian Cultural Center in George Ward Park, taking about 10% of the park’s dedicated land. Their plans include several buildings, a retail area, parking lots, even an amphitheater for concerts, and they are asking the city for a 75-year free lease for the project! See map and more details in Links section at right. Get involved! The group will hold presentations at 7 p.m. at St. Elias Church, 836 8th St. South, on the following dates: December 8 December 15 January 12 Vote No! Everyone who lives in the neighborhood can vote! The Neighborhood Association will vote on this project on February 2 at 7 p.m. at St. Elias Church. Without the neighborhood’s approval, securing the 75-year free lease, and the needed change in zoning from residential to commercial will be difficult. To stay informed, join the neighborhood listserv at GlenIris@yahoogroups.com.
