The Birmingham Chinese Garden-Asian Cultural Center Foundation has big plans to build a Chinese Garden-Asian Cultural Center in George Ward Park, taking about 10% of the park’s dedicated land. Their plans include several buildings, a retail area, parking lots, even an amphitheater for concerts, and they are asking the city for a 75-year free lease for the project! See map and more details in Links section at right. Get involved! The group will hold presentations at 7 p.m. at St. Elias Church, 836 8th St. South, on the following dates: December 8 December 15 January 12 Vote No! Everyone who lives in the neighborhood can vote! The Neighborhood Association will vote on this project on February 2 at 7 p.m. at St. Elias Church. Without the neighborhood’s approval, securing the 75-year free lease, and the needed change in zoning from residential to commercial will be difficult. To stay informed, join the neighborhood listserv at [email protected].

I am honestly a bit overwhelmed by the momentum this has gained so quickly. This response belongs entirely to all of you who care about our park. I never expected this much attention and I am just so grateful to be part of such a dedicated neighborhood.

Totally against this. The traffic is already bad enough without adding an amphitheater and a concert venue right in our backyards.

Dont turn our park into a commercial zone. Keep it public for everyone.

I grew up playing in that park. It belongs to the residents not the city to just give away for free.

75 years for free?? Absolutely not. Find somewhere else for a retail complex this is a neighborhood park not a mall site.

LEAVE GEORGE WARD ALONE!!! It is the only place I can walk my dog in peace. Keep the developers out of our neighborhood.

We need the green space for our kids. Why build over a perfect park when there are so many empty lots downtown that need love?
