As advocates for our children, the parents of Grimes-Fleming students vehemently oppose an extended school day. It is an extreme and unnecessary measure for our school. An extended school day would be detrimental to our children's psycho-social development and of no academic benefit. The extended school day would leave little precious time during our children's most important formative years for family time, not to mention homework, dinner, sleep. Extracurricular activities would come to a halt. The invaluable social skills learned from peer interaction would be virtually non existent. All areas in a childs life compromised are essential to a child's wrll being. Our chidren need balanced lives.
Our school performs well. Tutoring, after school programs and activities are offered consistently. A longer day does not create a better performing child, rather a tired, perhaps frustrated child. Children already struggling to maintain their grades are surely being set up to fail with the addition of this non academic padding. This is unacceptable to us as parents! There may be schools where this is an attractive proposition, Grimes- Fleming is not one of those schools! CPS is NOT our babysitter, our family time is valuable. Do not sacrifice our children, our families, for the benefit of a political platform!
