This letter is in response to the recent decision to extend the school day in order to make up for our inclement weather days. We, the students at Jim Hill High School, believe the decision was made hastily and without regard for all parties concerned. Many students have after school responsibilities such as jobs, siblings, and practices that will be impacted if this decision is fully implemented. Parents will be inconvenienced in terms of transportation, child care, and their jobs. Academic instructors are put in a corner because they have other jobs, children, and oftentimes school that will be inadvertently impacted by this decision. Support staff does not get paid for working for this extra hour. The question becomes how are other school districts coping with this state-wide problem?

If you do not agree with the Board's decision join us in the fight against the extra hour!

The emails I receive from teachers and students detailing their personal hardships are heavy to read but they confirm exactly why we started this. I have been spending my nights drafting formal responses to the board while balancing my own classwork. We are exhausted and stretched thin but we are not backing down until they listen.

Seeing this momentum grow has been exhausting but necessary. It is clear that we are not the only ones feeling the weight of this decision.

I work , and I’m not able to alter my work schedule . My manager won’t allow me to have more that 3 tardies out of a month , and being that the new school time is 4:30 I’ll be late everyday and will eventually be fired and i just CAN NOT afford to get fired .. because I won’t be able to pay for my cap and gowns , senior dues or nothing pertaining to school .. I just CAN NOT comply with this new time frame ..

I personally feel as if getting out at 4:30 should be reconsidered because of the fact that some students work and some teachers have kids and other jobs to attend to.

The governor issued A state of emergency and it was the district’s responsibility to send A letter asking to be allowed to dismiss the days missed due to the weather and problems with the water but they neglecting to do so should not affect the lives of students after school and out of school

Saturday School would fit better into our schedules as students. Some of us have jobs that we attend after school and an additional hour interferes with our work schedules. We would also get home later usual.

First of all we don't want to be in school for another hour and some people have jobs where do our sleeping hours go some of us play sports to so now we got to have practices pushed back then not to mention that we have homework and others have parents who have to work so how are we gone be getting to school at 7: 30 this is not a reasonable time
