Since I arrived in Skipton as Headteacher of Skipton Girls' High School, I have become increasingly concerned about the congestion and volume of traffic on Gargrave Road; parents parking dangerously outside school to drop off and pick up children and the conflict on the road and neighbouring streets which, sadly at times has been incredibly disrespectful to local residents.

I wish therefore for us to take the initiative to launch an Urban 20 Campaign through the organisation BRAKE. I'd like SGHS to work with the community; Julian Smith MP and local and County Councillors to implement GO 20 and 20mph limits for Gargrave Road and to address the road traffic issues AND to find sustainable solutions to school transport and parking.

The days feel long and the traffic out there is as chaotic as ever. We are nearing a thousand signatures and that threshold is where we finally force them to pay attention. Please push this to people who live near the school because we have to keep this momentum moving forward.

One hundred people have now backed this call for safer streets on Gargrave Road. The process of getting those in power to listen is exhausting but this number proves I am not alone in my frustration.

When you drive on this road at peak school times it is total chaos. The road is not very wide and you have buses parked up children trying to dodge cars that are speeding along. Please can something be done straight away rather than waiting for extreme damage to be done.

That's a good start! But speed limit on its own won't solve all the problems such as very poor parking or drop off opportunities, extremely narrow lanes, no proper bus bays, children don't use the pelican crossing rather recklessly cross the road etc.

So many schools are on roads with 20mph limits for the safety of the children, ours should be the same. This is especially important when our school site is spread across Gargrave Road and pupils may have to cross a main road to get from one lesson to the next.

As a resident on Gargrave Road, parent of a daughter in Yr11 at Skipton Girls High School AND a massive supporter of such campaigns run by Brake and Cycling UK to make our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists I wholeheartedly support this petition.

As a resident of Gargrave Road and a parent of 2 children, I would urge the authorities to implement a 20mph limit. Drivers often exceed the current limit and more should be done to protect our school children and residents alike.

I witnessed a young student hit by a vehicle on this road a few years ago. I often see cars in excess of the 30 mph limit. More than half of pedestrian deaths and serious injuries occur on roads with a 30 mph speed limit......
