And Samantha, the fact that if something happened and an eleven-year-old, say, ran into the road, they may not be as sensible as an adult driver so if they ran and a driver only had a small space to stop, it would be better if they went at 20mph. If adults are more responsible than 16- so they should take caution around the high school as crowds of girls go every morning and don't neccessarily check to see if its safe to cross. It's a part of the community to teach their kids to be sensible around cars but its also a part of the community to make children safe by going slower.

This is a fantastic thing because we all need to be more aware of the speed cars go at and the dangers. I heard that at 30mph a car takes 6 car lengths to stop, at 20mph is only takes 3. Our school will be safer when walking across the roads.

I think this petition distracts from the real problem with road safety, self awareness and common sense. Yes while reducing the speed of cars would potentially make it safer in less serious injuries would occur if hit by a car it would also causing a big build up in traffic as cars are slower. I feel that the headmasters of EGS and SGHS should instead inform the students of the accidents that have occurred and advise them to be sensible around roads. The act of blaming the speed of cars instead of some children foolishness is absurd. Parents feel justified to still allow there kids to run across the road when there traffic lights next to both schools which is good practice to use on any road. Of course now i know that this petition has lost most of its momentum but i implore the headmasters to make children accountable instead of the drivers on the road.

I live 100 yards from the school and the speed of some drivers is extremely fast and there needs to be a 20 mph speed limit. It will only work if it is enforced by the police becuase actions speak louder than words. Parents dropping off kids also cause a huge problem so maybe the school should enforce that !!!

20mph is fast enough around a school as this road especially gets very busy

This part of the road should be a 20 zone.

There are many good reasons to limit speed near schools. I regularly use gargrave road and at certain times it is very congested adding to my worries about the safety of children. I can't imagine that a 20mph limit with such good intention would not be warmly welcomed by most people in the town.
