Under the animal welfare act 2006, people who abuse animals only get a maximum of 6 months prison time and up to £20,000 fine. This is disgusting and yet the government refuses to change this. The rspca works very hard to gather the evidence of animal abuse yet there powers in prosecuting are severely limited. We need a minimum prison sentence of 2 years, have all animal abusers be named and shamed and placed on a list (like they do with sex offenders) and have a fine of up to £75,000. Please sign this petition and help deter people from causing harm to animals. The current sentencing and fines animal abusers get does not make people stop and think before they harm animals.
