In the summer of 2010 Leeds Metropolitan University gave Geoffrey Boycott an Honorary Doctorate in Sports Science for his services to cricket. Sadly, what has not been taken into consideration, is his performance off the pitch with a court case against him for domestic violence (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/211569.stm) and also more recently his comments about depression (http://tinyurl.com/6y4kuqb). We are asking Leeds Met to withdraw this degree as we feel he should not be considered a role model for our students. 'The Sun' fired him after his conviction saying "Our readers would find repugnant the idea of us employing someone with a conviction for violence against a woman". We believe that his record of abuse and recent insensitive comments make his connection with Leeds Met wholly inappropriate as these issues affect many of our students. [have taken his 'indiscretions' even more to heart as many of our members suffer from issues relating to depression and domestic violence.] Please sign and pass on. Thanks Liam Challenger On Behalf of Leeds Met Students' Union

Updates

April 6, 2011

The increase in the number of signatories has provided the necessary leverage to initiate formal contact with the university administration. I am currently drafting a letter to the board of governors detailing our request for a review of this honorary degree.

Completely agree. How can a uni stand by a guy like this? It sets such a bad example for everyone studying there.

He is no role model. Being good at cricket doesnt give you a pass to be a horrible person to women.

A conviction for domestic violence should have disqualified him from the start. Why is this even a question???

I used to respect him but the way he talks about depression is just plain ignorant. He doesnt deserve to be honored by anyone.
