We request more traffic controls for S. Genesee St. as soon as possible. The stop sign recently added at 38th and Genesee has begun to address the traffic calming necessary for this high-use street, but as soon as cars pass that stop sign, or if they are coming from Lake Washington Boulevard or 50th ave S., this stretch of Genesee regularly sees cars going 40 miles an hour without regard for pedestrians.
With the amount of activity near these streets (playfields, dog park, football fields, children's activities such as cheerleading practice, soccer, baseball, rowing center, trails, etc), Genesee should not be so treacherous and impossible to cross.
After several accidents, we feel it is time to incorporate better
lighting, a four way stop at 46th Ave S. and S. Genesee St, cross-
walks with lit paths activated by pedestrians, and 20mph zones
regulated by camera.
Similar traffic calming should also be considered at S. Lake
Washington Blvd. near the Mt Baker Rowing Center. Crossing from Genesee Park to the lakeside is similarly dangerous.
The citizens of this neighborhood and all the people who enjoy its
recreations (SeaFair, Danskin Triathalon, Seattle Marathon, etc) need to be able to cross S. Genesee st. and Lake WA Blvd. without jeopardizing life and limb.
I really never thought this would gain so much traction when I started typing it out on my phone that one afternoon after nearly getting clipped by a sedan near the rowing center. It is wild to think about how many people actually feel this exact same stress every time they try to reach the park because the cars just do not stop for anyone nowadays. We have real momentum now and I just hope the city actually puts down the phones and pays attention to us.
