The administration of St. John's School has violated their own handbook by publicizing both the punishment and the gender of a student who wrote an insensitive comment on his twitter feed. The signees of the petition do not condone what Mr. Smith said nor do they disagree with the administration's decision to punish him, but they disagree with degree of the punishment and/or the public nature of it. We ask for a formal apology for how the situation was handled, and that in the future the administration does not use people's failures as "teachable moments" in a way that can publicly shame a student.
We understand that you may be hesitant to do so, but we ask that you sign your name when you sign the petition instead of signing anonymously. You won't face any negative repercussions for signing this petition publicly, but giving names to the petition strengthens it.
