This forum has been established to express public opinion on the parking issue in Cobh that is being solved in an unfair manner.
The Traffic Warden enforced the parking regulations with unnecessary enthusiasm. He has given out 1,440 tickets last year to people who were trying to shop or look around Cobh town centre. €247,000 has been collected in parking tickets and fines over 2 years. It appears more to do with the revenue collecting than good traffic management. Those fines have been given to parents waiting to collect or drop off their children outside the schools, people posting their letters, getting cash out of ATMs or trying to collect groceries from the local shop.
At the same time our Traffic warden, (who is also a Litter Warden) issued only 7 tickets for litter offences over the last two years. Considering that Cobh has been recently voted the “Dirtiest Town” in Ireland maybe he should be re-directing his enthusiasm into executing fines for littering offences.
The parking issue is discouraging people to shop locally and affects local businesses – from the end of Harbour Row to Pillars Bar there are 40 shops/pubs etc. which are idle. Maybe if parking was easier those places would have a chance to survive Given that a shop in Cobh centre can pay €3,800 in rates and water charges, Town Council should be also interested in making parking in Cobh less of an issue.
If you agree that too many parking tickets are being issued and not enough is done about litter/dog fouling in Cobh please sign this petition with your comments (to add comment you need to enable cookies on your computer).
Be sure to express your concerns to election candidates when they come looking for your vote in July local elections.
The silence from the council chambers is heavy but it confirms exactly why this matters. I am spending my evenings documenting the disparity between these parking tickets and the state of our streets. We are not backing down because this town deserves better than revenue collection under the guise of management.

Reaching this level of support is exhausting but it proves that I am not the only one frustrated by these unfair fines. I am tired of the constant uphill battle against the council but this momentum confirms that we are finally being noticed.

My shop is empty half the time because people are too scared to stop here. Cobh will be a ghost town at this rate.

1440 tickets is an absolute joke. He clearly has nothing better to do. Enough is enough.

Ridiculous. Was trying to pick up a prescription for ten minutes and came back to 80 euro fine. This town is dying because of this nonsense

Total money racket. Funny how there is no warden when the streets are covered in rubbish but the second you stop for a coffee your car is targeted

STOP TARGETING LOCALS. Fix the litter problem instead of harassing people trying to do their shopping

Keep the ticket machine on the schools. Its embarrassing how they treat parents just trying to drop off kids.
