Recently the PA Fish and Boat Commission voted to extend the no wake zone up the Allegheny River from the 9th Street bridge to the Veteran’s Bridge.
The change is intended to create safer conditions for mooring vessels along the riverwalk, a popular boater hangout along the Allegheny River near Point State Park, according to Mike Parker, a spokesman for the Fish and Boat Commission.
This makes sense because both sides of the Allegheny River there have hard “sea walls” (cement or block walls) and the wake from boats bounces back and forth, creating dangerous conditions for boaters (especially seniors). Elsewhere on the rivers the natural shoreline dissipates wake more quickly.
This petition is requesting that the no wake zone be extended up the Monongahela River up to the Smithfield Street bridge as well.
The marinas at Station Square are the only marinas that fall victim to hard sea walls and its impact on wake. We have had people get hurt because the docks at the marina and the boats moored there bounce around violently due to out of control wake.
In addition, there are a lot of commercial businesses that operate out of these marinas and their employees and customers are being put at risk. Included are the Crusin’ Tikis boats, Pittsburgh Pedal Boats, Freedom Boat Club Pittsburgh, the Gateway Clipper Fleet and Rush Hour Charter Boats.

The dangerous conditions at the Station Square docks are still causing problems for boaters and local business employees every day. Send an email to the Fish and Boat Commission commissioners right now to demand they address this safety risk on the Monongahela. Keep tagging their official account on Facebook to make sure they see these accounts of people getting hurt.

We hit a major milestone today and the momentum shows that the city is finally paying attention to safety at Station Square. Post this link on Facebook right now to keep the pressure on the Commission. Email your local representative to demand they back this extension before someone else gets hurt.

The change will certainly help in fostering safer conditions for mooring vessels along the riverwalk.
For the amount money boaters put into their crafts, I fully support the city making a No Wake Zone to include Station Square docks. First for safety (so no one gets knocked off the docks), second for protecting property of others.
As members of Freedom Boat Club, we agree that our entry and exit safety would be improved by the extension of the no wake zone
It is just as necessary, if not more so, to extend the Monongahela River no wake zone as that for the Allegheny River.
I fully support this petition initiated by Michael Hills. I believe extending the no wake zone to the Smithfield Street Bridge would greatly improve river safety along this very busy part of the Monongahela.

I support this extension of the no wake zone. During peak boating activity the wakes from boats passing the Station Square Marina can create dangerous conditions on the docks. Last week I witnessed someone fall on the dock while exiting a boat due to a turbulent wake striking the marina. Fortunately they were not hurt.
