We, the citizens of Pitt County, petition the city of Greenville to include a connected system of sidewalks and bike lanes as part of the Evans Street widening project.

The primary purpose of this petition is to support the addition of sidewalks and bike lanes as part of the Evans Street widening project. Provision of these amenities provides a safe environment that encourages physical activity and promotes community health.

There has understandably been opposition to this addition from adjacent neighborhoods as it may possibly encroach upon entryways and landmarks. However, the NCDOT has provided budgeted funds for the replacement of the aforementioned features.

The inclusion of sidewalks and bike lanes in the Evans Street widening project and budgeted replacement of entryways/ landmarks constitutes a win-win for the entire community.

Reaching this milestone feels like a heavy weight shifting even if the path ahead remains long and difficult. I am exhausted by the resistance we face but seeing this level of support keeps me moving forward.

Pedestrians/Bikers alike will benefit from this project. If funding is available it should happen. It is a win/win for all: pedestrians, bikers and vehicles that push it too close in order to pass them!

I regularly ride to work from winterville to beyond the airport in the spring and summer. I leave right at dawn to avoid traffic. I use Evans st for most of my ride. I don't ride as much because it is an effort of careful coordination to make sure I leave my car at work so I don't ride home at 4:00pm. Dedicated controlled bike lanse on this route will definitely increase my rides to work from one day a week to daily!!

Bike lanes sidewalks are so critical for any city in 2017. Everyone wants a walkable or rideable city. This NEED is not going away. I cannot think of a better use of public money than to put in sidewalks and bike lanes. Both items protect cars and walkers / bike riders.

More bike lanes and sidewalks are proven economic boosters. Have to spend money to make money.
