This winter, there has been an alarming increase in accidents on the road leading from Chelwood Gate to Danehill. The black ice caused by poor drainage and lack of grit on the road, particularly on the hill down to and past the Coach and Horses pub and outside Danehill CE Primary School, is causing a great problem. There have been several calls made to East Sussex County Council regarding the treacherous conditions but nothing has been done. On Monday 14th December 2009, one car containing 3 children on the way to Danehill School, ended up on its side. Thankfully there were no major injuries, but this is unfortunately just one of many recent incidents. The road is not only a bus route, but the main route for parents from Chelwood Gate to take their children to school. We feel that our children should be able to get to school in safety and that residents of Chelwood Gate and Danehill should not have to take long diversions on A roads, especially when the weather conditions are far from extreme. As a matter of urgency, we request that the Council fix the drainage problem on the entire stretch of the road and that it is added to the Highways' gritting route.
