Dear CUNY Chancellor Milliken,

In 2010, the PSC Delegate Assembly approved a bargaining agenda that included a demand that “the maximum teaching load for full-time faculty at all colleges shall be reduced by 3 teaching contact hour credits annually.” We, the undersigned members of the PSC, believe that a reduction of the unreasonable workload at CUNY is in the interest of our students and it should remain a top priority in the current contract negotiations.

I teach at LaGuardia, and out workload is 27 contact hours. I feel that I would be a better professor for my students if the course load was reduced to 24. I would happily spend this time meeting one-on-one with students who need more face time to succeed.

My students' learning depends on my working conditions; if I am overworked my students will leave college underprepared for the work world. They will have a degree but not the skills they need because the faculty who taught them did not have the time to provide the necessary feedback on their work.

Please support the 3-credit load reduction which would put us on par with other public colleges around the country. Current workloads make it impossible to support my students the way they deserve AND meet the research and service requirements to my full ability. Assistant Professor, John Jay College

I taught at John Jay for over 40 years, struggling to balance my work with students and my research. Each task required more time than I had. A reduced teaching load (as has been managed at other CUNY colleges) would have relieved some of my chronic exhaustion!

CUNY tries to be everything- a teaching college and a research college. We can't have it both ways. If you want research productive faculty (and if you want research faculty to stay), the teaching load must be reduced. -asst prof, JJC

Asst. Professor, LaGuardia Community College 9 classes does not allow for us to give our students the individual attention they deserve, combined with a very high committee work expectation plus publications.
