The workload at the community colleges is unsustainable. Between a 27 hour load and endless committee and administrative duties, health and life balances are suffering. Much of this work is gratuitous.

HEA in the math department at city college. I keep getting responsibilities added to my job title. I can't take much more of this.

While teaching 9 courses a year and doing committee work, it is next to impossible to write and do research for publications during the semester except on the train and at bus stops, not the ideal way to do either. If we had more time to work on our publications, we could impart this cutting edge knowledge to our students as well as contribute to our disciplines.

I teach at LaGuardia, and out workload is 27 contact hours. I feel that I would be a better professor for my students if the course load was reduced to 24. I would happily spend this time meeting one-on-one with students who need more face time to succeed.

Why does the Gov. not give teachers a Contract after almost 7 years? This is unconscionable.

If community college faculty are expected to teach, publish, keep abreast of their field, and serve on committees like senior college faculty, yet encounter less prepared students, it is more than justified to reduce the workload.
