Grad workers teach at Rutgers University
Grad workers research at Rutigers University
Grad workers pay tuition at Rutgers University
Grad workers CARRY Rutgers University

And now grad workers are organized through their union and they are demanding respect and proper recognition of their work through:

  • Salary raises - $4,000 in the first year of the contract
  • Union recognition as TAs & GAs for hourly workers, PTLs, etc
  • Unified pay, benefits and protections across TA, GA, and fellow positions
  • Funds allocated to the specific needs of international grad workers, grad workers with children, and grad workers in need of emergency funds and funds for housing

So far, the administration has given almost no or little response to the grad worker bargaining platform. But they can't wait us out forever, and they can't ignore our issues.
That's why we ask that you sign this statement and beneath your name we want you to write two things
  1. What you're "sick of" in terms of grad working conditions -- working more than 15 hours a week, etc.
  2. 2. What you need now to make your working experience better - whether it be a raise, a better funded position, protections from harassment, etc.

Sign today and your union will begin forwarding your responses to the ultimate decision-maker in this campaign, President Barchi.

Remember, grad workers CARRY this university and all the boss is counting on is that you'll remain SILENT while they continue to exploit you. Use your voice! If grads come together to fight, we will WIN!

Updates

November 2, 2018

President Barchi continues to ignore our demands while we carry the weight of this entire university on our backs. I am reading your stories of exploitation every single day and it is clear that the administration thinks they can just wait for us to disappear. They are dead wrong because we are only getting louder.

Grad workers and PTLs teach over 50% of Rutgers’ undergrad courses. Only 1.4% of RU’s budget goes to our TA/GA salaries. We need a raise NOW!

I have a baby. Daycare costs literally half of my GA salary. It is impossible to feed my child and pay rent with the other half. Something needs to change now!

I'm sick of having to grade hours and hours every single week while accruing more and more credit card debt! I don't have enough money to buy meals, but I don't have time to cook for myself either. I need my research time protected from excessive TA workload!

I am sick of hearing about PhD candidates who are losing funding after 3 or 4 years of hard work on their dissertation research. We need more TA/GA lines and guaranteed 5 years funding for all admitted PhD students, minimum!

Graduate workers haven't had a cost of living increase since 2013. I'm essentially making $1,800 less than I did when I started at Rutgers, while New Brunswick rents have gone up by nearly 30%. We need a raise NOW!

A cost of living increase needs to be reflected in our salary. We should not have to worry about paying bills while working on a TAship and dissertation.

My program requires me to do a year of research away from campus. Why do I have to pay $2,000 in tuition when I’m not even in New Jersey? We need zero tuition for PhD students!
