Online classes should promote access to education not hinder it. EMU is marginalizing students through price gouging. One way diversity, equity, and inclusion are promoted is through affordable education. These policies don't just marginalize non-traditional students, but students from a broad range of demographics and intersectionalities. Many students are paying an additional $800 to $1200 to take online courses.

Yes, EMU waived this fee for Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 due to the pandemic, but they have reinstated the fee for Summer 2021 and the subsequent semesters.

Online course fees at other Michigan universities:

EMU: $80 per credit hour

NMU: $50 per credit hour

WMU: $20 per class

CMU: No fee

MSU: No fee

UM: No fee

Wayne State: No fee

In fact, Wayne State has a program where a student who takes a total of 24 credits over the Fall and Winter semesters gets a 30% discount on their Summer tuition.

This would likely help promote equal opportunity learning for people with disabilities and/or busy schedules

Most of my classes next semester aren’t even offered in person. I shouldn’t be responsible for paying the online fee when online is the only option I have!

Lower the tuition! Attend to the needs of students! We as college students matter!

An expectation needs to be set where once the same number of in person classes are offered as were back in Winter 2020, that’s when they can reinstate the online fee. Until then, there is no reason for it since the majority of instruction is being forced to be online.

As a parent, I don't appreciate this online fee policy from EMU nor the reduction of in-person classes for Fall 2021. Let vaccinated students go to class. Follow U OF M's policy and require all staff and students to vaccinate, get a waiver or wear a mask.

Ridiculous to keep charging these fees when the university isnt even back to normal. We are already broke enough working part time jobs to afford these classes!
