We, a Year 13 Social Studies group, are initiating this petition as part of our internal assessment, aiming to influence a policy change at our school. We believe that students should not be punished for factors beyond their control, such as bus delays or cancellations. As many students rely on public transport, students shouldn’t be punished for unpredictable delays or cancellations. Detentions for bus delays add unnecessary stress and pressure to students’ lives, impacting their well-being and academic performance. This petition will target students in New Zealand, particularly students in Macleans College.

“Students are required to be punctual and are to be at school by 8:20 am”

We request that Macleans College reconsider the policy above so students are excused from receiving detentions due to bus delays.

By signing this petition, you are considering the challenges faced by students using public transport.

I tots agreee with this, teachers use the excuse “take an earlier bus” as justification for the detention. I don’t agree with this at all. Students shouldnt be responsible for situations outside their control. The excuse “Take an earlier bus” is not justification for grounds of a detention.

Regardless of whether or not the bus is school sanctioned or ran, Macleans college's obsession with handing out detentions like free candy is concerning. To the teachers who blame students for being out-of-zone, you don't understand what is going on in someone's personal life and therefore not for yours to judge. Students already suffer from enough daily stressed, why add more?

It is a systemic issue with Auckland transport with some kids not having a choice in how they get to school why punish kids who’s buses have not shown up

It shouldn't be the student's fault that the school's designated bus driver turned up to school late
