Edwardsville, known for its affluent image and home to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), lacks a local skatepark, with the nearest one 10 miles away. This gap presents an opportunity to invest in the city's large youth demographic, including college, middle school, and high school students, who are significantly interested in skateboarding. The proposed skatepark aims to be a public, permanent, and unique facility, reflecting local culture and minimizing noise. It's expected to provide numerous benefits, including promoting mental and physical health, fostering community engagement, and offering a free space for unstructured play and exercise, thus enhancing the community's identity.

Updates

The volume of support has reached a level that allows me to schedule a formal presentation with the city planning office. I am currently finalizing the proposal documents to ensure our technical requirements for the facility site are addressed clearly in that meeting.

This is such a great idea! Not everyone plays team sports or has money to play private leagues. Skateboarding is a cheap and fun way for everyone to challenge themselves mentally and physically. The Edwardsville Skatepark would be a great service to the people of Edwardsville and many surrounding communities !

I grew up in Edwardsville and always had to go to another town to find a park to skate. I still live in the area in Caseyville and would like to have a nice place to skate! The skatepark in Caseyville isn't very good.

It would be nice to have a skatepark available for people in the area. The available options are a far distance from here which leaves the possibility of it being in a questionable environment for minors, which would be the majority of the people wanting to use the park in our community. I take my little brothers and their friends to the skatepark all the time, but it would be great to have one in town, maybe even over by Plumber Park, close. A park would also give skaters a safe place to go instead of being in the streets or parking lots. I feel having a skatepark in our community would also make parents feel a lot better about trusting the safety of their children.

I have been coaching skateboarding in the local area for about 2 years now & I am so excited to see this project rolling out! Edwardsville NEEDS this! SO MANY of the families involved with my classes have said that they will be more than willing to help with fundraising! LETS GO, EDWARDSVILLE SKATEPARK!

I think a skatepark in Edwardsville would be a great idea. It gives people young and old the opportunity to have a safe place that they can practice their passion. It also gives people the chance to become part of a very welcoming and supportive community. It would be nice personally for me because I live in jerseyville Illinois and my options for skateparks close to me is very limited.

My name is Tyler, I’m from Staunton IL. I’ve been skating for about 6 years now and it’s been the most positive influence in my life. A park in Edwardsville would give so many opportunities to kids who feel alienated from regular team sports. There is little to no activity that is as inclusive as skateboarding, and a park would be an objectively beneficial addition to this town.
