Here's the scenario:
You pull up to a parking meter, pull out your smart phone and pay for 2 hours of parking with the App or by phone.
You run your errands and are done with your parking spot within 1.5 hours.
After you drive away, someone else comes and pays for parking in the same stall.
The city has now collected your money on that half an hour, and the next person's money on that same half an hour. A double-dip system, if you will.
Unlike old 'change fed meters', where if you came to a meter that had time left on it, you could top it up, the new digital systems just forfeit the unused time and the city double collects.
Double collecting... Who is this fair for? The city. Not the citizens paying for the parking. And where is this extra money going? We aren't seeing any reward for this money; just parking fee increases annually!
There is absolutely a way that the programmers of the App can program this system the same way as we are now used to paying for gas. The system pre-authorizes your card and in the end, only charges you for what you've used. Wouldn't you agree?

I have long thought not being able to stop your parking with technology that lets you start it is not fair. Lets make parking fair with the proper and full use of technology. Let us end our parking and pay what we owe. Dr. Baird
I very much agree with this proposal to alleviate the potential for double-dipping by the city for the use of their parking stalls.
Good thinking! Such an easy fix. But it will cost them to reprogram the system and will cost them in lost “scam” revenue, so this will have to be REALLY loud for change to happen. Good for you!
Costco downtown double dips. You purchase your 2 hour parking ticket using your license number. If you only use it for 1/2 hour, the next person going into your stall will pay again for 2 hours, with impark double dipping for 1.5 hours.
I have recognized this from the outset of the app. That is why I preferentially still use coins
No Hike in Parking Fees we already pay such high rates on everything in Vancouver from rent to groceries to Gas & now you want to increase that with ridiculous parking fees.
