The school board voted to retain the valedictorian and salutatorian designations. It is encouraging to see that honoring academic achievement remains a priority for our district. We should remain attentive to future policy discussions to ensure these standards stay intact.

VB School Board Members,

Please vote against removing the designations of Valedictorian and Salutatorian. It is important to recognize academic excellence and award these high achievers for their hard work.

VBCPS currently uses grading practices in many of its schools that do not issue zeros to students for work not done or deduct points for late work. In some schools the lowest grade given is a 50, even if no work is done. Now VBCPS has proposed to abolish the recognition of the highest achievers.

We MUST raise the bar for academic excellence, not continue to lower it.

Please vote NO on April 24 to changing the policy that will remove the Valedictorian and Salutatorian designations.

The conversation surrounding these academic designations has reminded me that we define success through the values we choose to prize. It is clear that many of you feel the current direction ignores the commitment required to achieve at the highest levels. I am currently preparing to highlight these concerns during the upcoming board discussions to ensure they understand that rigor remains a priority for this community.

Reaching this milestone confirms that many of us believe academic recognition is a vital part of our school culture. Seeing this level of engagement reminds me that we share a common desire to uphold the value of hard work within our classrooms.

Hard work in school pays off in the long term. Colleges pay attention to this hard work. Specific scholarships are awarded based on this achievement. If there's no reason for kids to work hard and achieve, what are we asking from the next generation?

Trying to reach for excellence helped me develop study skills that I needed later in my education and work.

Listen to the survey participants! How can you vote to eliminate when the people said to keep? If you recognize top athletes, why do you not wish to recognize top scholars?? If you want to "level" the playing field, then get rid of online AP classes....do two sets of rankings for schools with academies.

Everyone does NOT get a trophy in life. Only those who do the work and strive for excellence do. Let's celebrate these achievements of our kids, not nullify them so everyone else can have a "safe space" to be mediocre.

While I do believe that there are unhealthy levels of stress and competition in high school and I think we should be cognizant of that, I also believe that the people that achieve these levels of success should be recognized.

That is a earned position. We need to let students understand there are rewards for great efforts and it should not be taken away because other students do not strive for the ame goals. Students do not gain real life insights for after high school by coddling. Students should understand it is ok to be second first.

What are our children going to become if academic expectation are continually lowered? High expectations=higher levels of success.
