We, the parents of students enrolled in the Virginia Beach City Public school system, petition the Virginia Beach School Board and Dr. James G. Merrill, Superintendent, to revise the current grading policy and adopt a 10 point scale as follows:
90-100= A=4.0
80-89= B=3.0
70-79= C=2.0
60-69= D=1.0
59-below= 0
Provide 1.0 point weight for each AP/IB class
We believe these changes are necessary for the following reasons:
- Fairfax County and Loudoun County, in Northern Virginia, have recently adopted the 10 point scale and now have an advantage over our students in competing for college admissions, honors programs, and merit scholarships.
-At risk students will have an increased chance for success which will encourage them to stay in school and potentially lower drop out rates.
I just blinked and saw the counter hit one hundred signatures which is honestly way faster than I expected for a Tuesday afternoon project. My coffee is cold but my brain is buzzing because clearly this grading policy issue is bothering more people than just me and my dining room table notes.

I honestly never thought this would gain this much steam but here we are and it feels like people are finally waking up to the unfair playing field our kids are on. It is honestly exhausting to think about how long we have been asking for this change but seeing so many folks on board makes me feel like we might actually get someone at the school board table to listen for once.

About time! VB is falling behind. My daughter deserves a fair shot at college admissions.

My son is working so hard but still coming up short because of this outdated scale. It is putting our kids at a huge disadvantage compared to other counties.

I moved here from Loudoun and the difference is huge. Poor kids are getting punished for doing the same work.

RIDICULOUS that our kids are competing for scholarships against kids with way better gpas for the same exact grade. Fix this now.
