We the parents and caregivers of Division 6 at Ecole North Oyster implore you, NLPS SD 68, to take the needs of this classroom with the utmost consideration and urgency.

To date, this classroom has been staffed with the vice principle, various school staff and TOCs. The inconsistency has had negative impacts on both academic progression and overall student mental health. To put this into perspective, a TOC held parent interviews, not a regular staff member.

We were recently informed by the school that there would be 2 regular teachers hired to cover this class for the remainder of the school year. It has come to light that this information was not accurate; and in fact only 1 day/week has been contracted for this classroom. The remaining 4 days will be covered by TOCs.

The current TOC, Rebecca Kay, has been the only constant this class has known as she has been teaching in it a few days weekly since the start of the school year. Is there not a simple solution in hiring Rebecca Kay for the remainder of the year to support these students?

With our children's academic success and mental health at the core of this issue, we ask you to address and take action on this matter immediately. We are looking for assurance that there will be continuity and consistency in this classroom.

Respectfully,

Parents and guardians of student in Division 6, Ecole North Oyster, SD 68

The stories shared by parents in the comments highlight exactly why this instability is unacceptable. We are currently coordinating our next steps with the district office.

As has been proven over time consistency in the classroom, particularly regarding the teacher, is extremely important for providing a positive learning environment for children. It seems that many parents are supportive of finding a way for Mme. Kay to remain in her present position. I would agree with that as they would be the best judges of her role in their children’s education.

I strongly stand with Rebecca Kay being awarded this position as she is qualified, she has been the ONLY consistent staff, and has completed the 20 consecutive days in the position that the district has set out as a standard.

My daughter has struggled immensely with the inconsistencies in teachers this year. Rebecca (Madame Becky) is the ONLY constant in her school life right now.. and quite frankly the only reason we can even get her to attend. My daughter has profound learning disabilities, and losing Rebecca would be devastating for her. She had asked to be pulled from school if this is the case. Please consider treating Rebecca with the respect and title she deserves. Thank you.

Please give our kids and Mme. Becky the consistency they deserve. Becky has been fantastic and goes above and beyond.

I agree that having continuity plays a positive influence in children’s education. This situation is unacceptable.

Mme Becky has been a constant for our children this year. She is more than competent in her role and cares deeply for our students. As a teacher, I know how difficult it is for my class when I have to be away for just a day or two. There is always lost learning time, and a need to reconnect, particularly with those students who struggle. Considering the challenges our students have faced in their short time in school due to the pandemic, I strongly support securing Mme Becky as our lead teacher for the rest of the school year. To bring in someone new in January would be another loss for our students - many of whom already have anxiety around school and learning. I know that SD68 puts students first, and ask that you strongly consider our petition to keep Mme Becky as teacher of this class. It truly is what is best for our children. Thank you.
