We believe that the Edgewood-Colesburg art program has a very positive impact on the students that participate in it. According to pbs.org, art within schools has shown importance and positive effects on motor skills, accountability, language development, decision making, visual learning, inventiveness, cultural awareness, and improvements in academic performance. Eliminating this program will cause students to lack in these areas, which will cause them to struggle in society following their high school education. To make the students achieve to their highest ability when they have completed their education at Edgewood-Colesburg, the importance of the arts must considered. This has been proven by numerous studies. A West Virginia study found that students with more art credits performed better on the ACT. Another study showed that California 3rd graders who participated in special art programs saw their reading scores improve by 87 points. Therefore, this is why we believe that the Edgewood-Colesburg art program has a very positive impact on the students that participate in it.

Those who have added their signature to this petition agree that there is a need to maintain an instructor for the elementary and high school art programs.

Updates

March 19, 2015

I have drafted a formal letter requesting a direct meeting with the district board members to present our findings on student performance. We are currently verifying the specific school board contacts to ensure this document reaches the necessary decision makers.

The current level of public interest has prompted a formal request for a meeting with the school board to discuss the arts curriculum. I am currently preparing the documentation and research cited in our petition to present during that discussion.

All kids need this creative out let. Sometimes this is the only way they are able to express their creative side and express their emotions.. They need this positive outlet.

Please keep Art at Ed-Co...our kids do better in life with "creativity", it's one area they don't have to feel "to compete"...creativity is an important part of everyone's lives...thank you

Being in the Early Childhood feild I see how much kids use there imagination in art. They are using what they have learned in the past to add the the present. Art is such a great skill not just for young kids but ask many highschool kids and they use are to blow off steam or when they are bored. PLEASE consider all the facts before deciding on this matter.

School is not all about academics! There are MANY jobs in the world that require creativity and a thoughtful process that can only be developed through art courses!

Art class takes you beyond your comfort zone and promotes thinking outside of the box. This carries over to your everyday life. I have seen, first hand, the wonderment and boost of confidence the students display when they have finished a piece of art. It is with high hopes that the art program will be continued at the ED-CO scholl district.
