Please provide a comment as to why the Upper Darby School District arts programs are/were influential to you, or your children in the comments field. This petition will be shared with Governor Tom Corbett's office so he can join us on May 23rd along with local news.

As many of us now know, Tom Corbett's education budget is shaving off $4-million from the 2012-2013 Upper Darby School District budget. Based on this, about 57- teachers will be out of work, but the major challenge is what's right by the kids.

These budget cuts will eliminate art, music, physical education and library from the current curriculum while at the middle school level it will force a reduction in foreign language and technology classes.

Many of us are products of the Upper Darby School District, or have children in the district and greatly value a well rounded education. Art, music, physical education, library, foreign language and technology are paramount to the development of children just as much as the core curriculum. In fact, evidence based research shows that children exposed to the arts do better in reading, math, science and excel as adults more.

We ask that Tom Corbett join us at the May 23rd meeting at Upper Darby High School's Performing Arts Center. With 1000 signatures, this may be possible, which is the purpose of this petition.

Mr. Tom Corbett. Would you join us at the May 23rd event?

The signature count has reached a point where we are ready to formalize our request for a meeting with the Governor. We have begun drafting the official notification to his office to ensure this issue is on his schedule.

I am currently consolidating the personal testimonials from the comments section to include in a formal briefing packet for the Governor's office. This document will serve as a primary record of the impact these cuts have on our students when we present our case at the upcoming high school meeting.

UDHS arts program changed my life. Without the music department I probably wouldnt have even stayed in school. This is so wrong.

Keep the arts in the schools. It keeps kids out of trouble and gives them a place to belong. Do the right thing.

Ridiculous. Corbetts budget is a joke. Leave our arts programs alone.

Total disgrace. My son is in middle school and he loves his tech classes. Why are you punishing the kids for the budget mess???

My daughter finally found her confidence in the school band. You cant take that away from these kids. Its the only thing she actually looks forward to all day.

Gym and art are just as important as math. Kids need to be active and creative to learn properly. Think about the students for once.
