Started by DMV Dance Community 5 years, 8 months ago

The COVID-19 virus has threatened the health and well-being of the dance community across the nation and around the world. Recently, there has been virus transmission in the DC, Maryland & Virginia (DMV) dance community, despite the vast majority of community leaders recognizing the inherent risk of partner dancing and refraining from hosting any events. Therefore, the leaders of the DMV social dance community affirm and agree to abide by the following solidarity pledge, and we ask that you join us in protecting your community by adding your name, and sharing publicly to make your position clear.

WE PLEDGE:

· Not to organize, host, promote, or attend social dance events until there is a significant, sustained decrease in the risk of the pandemic.

· To acknowledge regulated, controlled & law-abiding operations conducted by dance-oriented businesses, such as small classes or rehearsals that practice social distancing, no partner changing, and mask wearing.

· To abide by active government ordinances & mandates at a minimum, and to self-impose stricter practices as appropriate in recognition of the inherent risk associated with partner dancing.

· To abide by this pledge through the winter months at a minimum, understanding that it's impossible to predict when circumstances will make this pledge obsolete.

Please consider not only signing, but sharing the link to this pledge on social media, as it's the public declaration of solidarity in purpose that will have a positive influence on our community.

WE CAN ONLY BEAT THIS WITH COLLECTIVE ACTION!

In a pandemic, partnered social dancing is the first to close and will be the last to restart. With 40% of COVID cases being asymptomatic, there is no way to guarantee safety with the skyrocketing cases right now.

As an instructor and dancer not seeing my community has been a difficult experience. But dance is not going anywhere and it is not worth losing anyone in the community because we don’t have restrain.

As a former dance teacher and promoter, it is hard not to go out dancing, but I get it. The sooner we can stop the spread of the Virus, the sooner we can get back to what we love doing. I am happy to do my part, and honored to be in the company of those who signed this.

This is the biggest challenge that our community has ever faced. Dance as an obvious super-spreader. We need to come together and protect the lives of our beloved fellow dancers and their families. It's not an easy task to stop doing what you love, but this is only temporary! Much love, Kat.

I have not danced since February. I have seen coronavirus up close as a hospital nurse. I will not be dancing at socials until it is truly safe to do so and I implore others to do the same. There is no safe gathering of any type right now.

I miss social dancing, teaching, rehearsals, all of it... so much. But when we are finally able to gather in hot sweaty rooms and breathe on each other in close quarters again, l don't want anyone to be missing.
