Dear All,

The purpose of this letter is to request that the NDCA consider immediate and appropriate consequences to ultimately protect the ballroom dance community from Mr Brian Baker.

In the wake of Ohio Star Ball’s announcement regarding the COVID test requirement, professional dancer and NDCA member, Brian Baker, made a Facebook post claiming that he had a template to create falsified negative COVID test certificates and anyone attending Ohio Star Ball who needed one could contact him to obtain one. (Refer to Image 1) This is a criminal action (Refer to link)

Mr. Baker proceeded to edit the post to indicate it was a joke, subsequently deleting after it was brought to his attention that it had caused serious concern. (Refer to Image 2) He responded on both his own personal page and on the Pro-Am International Facebook page by aggressively attacking various members of our Dancesport community who had posted concerns regarding his statement. His wife, Lauren, also a dancer, joined in (Refer to Images 3-10) Consequently, as a result of Mr. Baker’s remarks, many competitors and vendors have pulled out of attending Ohio Star Ball as well as considering opting out of Grand Nationals in Florida due to his presence.

Mr. Baker has repeatedly caused conflict in our industry (Examples, Image 11,12). His actions and comments now, not only threaten individuals on a personal level, but compromise events and the industry by instilling mistrust and fear in the competitors with respect to the competition’s ability to enforce safety during the pandemic. Furthermore, our concern is that since this idea is out there, it may encourage others to commit similar fraud.

We would like you to acknowledge receipt and consideration of this letter, the appendix of supporting evidence and our request that the NDCA take immediate and appropriate action to protect the ballroom community from the aggressions of Mr. Baker.

Sincerely,

The Dancesport Community

The feedback I keep receiving makes it clear that the community is not willing to move on from this behavior. I am still pushing for a response while dealing with the fallout of their attacks, and I truly appreciate the resolve everyone has shown during this exhausting process.

October 29, 2020

Reaching this level of support has been a long and exhausting process that I truly did not expect to navigate. It is draining to keep pushing for accountability when the other side digs in their heels. I am still here because the safety of our dance community leaves me no other choice.

I applaud Ohio Star Ball for adding an extra layer of safety with their COVID 19 Mandate. It is unconscionable that any individual would undermine a safety requirement by encouraging people to get a fake COVID test result. We must protect our world of dance.

In my personal opinion BRIAN Baker should have his NDCA membership revoked and should not be able to participate in any NDCA event for 1 or 2 years

His actions have had a chilling effect on my return to competition and studio practice.

After reading hateful rhetoric on FB numerous times from Mr. Baker, I chose to block him from my page. I can’t support people in our industry who make light out of others who have died from the serious virus (make it a hoax) nor would I feel safe attending an event Mr Baker is present at.

I do not know him personally, but am appalled that a pro is even engaging this way with customers. If he didn’t like the testing, he should have been a professional and voiced it to the organizer. He does not represent teachers, or the organization well.

The comments of Brian only add to dissent and mistrust. It’s hard for all my fellow NDCA members to know what’s true and what’s false, causing students to second think and maybe cancel competitions that greatly need revenue. It’s hard enough for all right now without all the stupidity of this man.

The dance community does not need these subversive and negative tactics from an individual that obviously has control issues. When people are out to control a situation that can be deadly, anyone who tries to undermine it and put the health and lives of others at risk should be dealt with swiftly.

Mr. Baker’s conduct has been unprofessional to say the least.
