Dr. Farrell J. Webb, Dean

College of Health and Human Development

California State University, Northridge

This letter is to address the collective concern regarding the closing of the Accelerated Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (A-BSN) program. As current students and alumni, we could not even begin to fathom what we would have done if there were not the option of the California State University, Northridge’s A-BSN program. This Accelerated program is a second-degree 15-month highly rigorous program for non-nursing degree holders who have a strong desire to become registered nurses, and is the only one in the San Fernando Valley.

As participants in this program, we can attest that we are all highly motivated, competitive, and eager individuals who are looking for further education and a chance to serve our community as nurses. We all come from various backgrounds and are able to bring our prior experiences into the classroom setting, therefore gaining insight from one another and increasing our level of understanding of the people that surround us. Current students and alumni recognize that the CSUN A-BSN program is held in high regard among healthcare professionals and employers. We continually show that we are hard working, mature, and compassionate nurses.

The A-BSN program has continued to graduate nurses who are critical thinkers, passionate about nursing, and are striving to advance the field of nursing. The professors in this program have been nothing short of outstanding. Each and every professor shows great stride in teaching us and have gone far and beyond the call of duty of a regular professor. They understand what this program means for us, and the sacrifices we choose to make to attend.

It is with great sadness that we have to explain to friends and family that are interested in applying for the A-BSN program in the near future that ours is unfortunately closing. The CSUN A-BSN program has meant so much to so many of us, and we hope that you consider the impact you are making when you’re closing its doors. Please, fight for our future, the future of patient care, and for the future of nursing.

Sincerely,

Accelerated Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing Students

I graduated from the A-BSN program in 2012 (cohort-9). I have since continued on to earn my MSN in nursing education and am currently serving undeserved populations at Olive View Medical Center. I would not be where I am now without the A-BSN program. It was and is truly a fantastic program.

This program prepared me for my current nursing career as a labor and delivery nurse at UCLA. It is of high-value, great quality, and much needed in the nursing profession. Please reopen this program to allow future nurses to join the profession with a strong foundation that this program definitely provides.

At a time when the nursing shortage is increasing in a state with one of the lowest nurse/population ratios, it is hard for me to understand how a public university could cut back on an affordable nursing education.

This 2nd career program has breathed new life into both its students and our community. The graduates are among some of the most outstanding I have ever known, and closing it or moving it financially out of reach for those whom it benefits would be a sad thing indeed. -Dr.H

Please keep this program open. My daughter was hoping to start this in another year. We need a program in the valley otherwise you are forcing students to move away from home and incur costs they can't afford. Thank you.

When I first heard about the news, I was absolutely shocked. I chose to go to CSUN knowing that there was an ABSN program. Had it not been for this program, I would have not gone to CSUN. Not only is it the only program in The Valley, but the closure of the program will decrease even more the number of nurses needed.

Please do not close the ABSN program. There are very few programs of this caliber in existence.
